Finding the Right Adventure: Stories for a Nature-Loving Young Reader

Reading has always been a part of our family rhythm—but over the past year, it’s become something more. Our seven-year-old, Arlo, has grown into a voracious reader, devouring two novels a week and constantly hungry for the next great adventure.

At first, we explored age-appropriate titles, but it quickly became clear that Arlo was ready for more depth—more excitement, more language, more immersion in the natural world he already explores every day. Living on a remote tropical island, surrounded by rainforests, coral reefs, and curious creatures, his imagination is fuelled by real-world adventures. The right books just help set it on fire.

So we turned to the classics: Charlotte’s Web, Pippi Longstocking, The Wind in the Willows—stories rich with character, heart, and often, a deep sense of place. But as I searched for new titles, I was surprised at how few book lists really fit Arlo’s reading style. He’s not just reading above his age—he’s reading around it. He craves stories where nature is more than a backdrop—it’s part of the plot.

Thankfully, our YouTube community stepped in with brilliant suggestions: The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, The Famous Five and Secret Seven series, and more. These are stories with real stakes, where kids roam forests, solve mysteries, and discover the world through wild, independent adventure. They feel timeless—maybe because they mirror the kinds of days Arlo spends here: barefoot and curious, chasing crabs, climbing trees, and dreaming up new expeditions.

For families like ours—who value time away from screens and want stories that inspire real-world exploration—these nature-infused adventures are gold. They're not just books; they’re invitations. To wander, to wonder, and to let imagination lead the way.

I’ll keep sharing titles we discover that strike the right balance of excitement, quality writing, and nature-rich settings. I’m putting all the recommendations together in a list I hope to share soon. And if you’ve got a recommendation that’s been a hit in your home, we’d love to hear it.

Big love, Katie
